Some 50 to 60 staunch supporters turned up outside the gates of Buckingham Palace at 2 pm on Saturday 6th August 2011 to protest at the continued inhumane treatment and detention of Charles Bronson. They strapped their banners to the Palace gates and hundreds of tourists and passers-by started to get involved.

Why Buckingham Palace? Well, Charlie's new book, PRISON DIARIES FROM THE CONCRETE COFFIN, is dedicated to his landlady, HRH Queen Elizabeth II.

After about twenty minutes armed police turned up to find out what was going on. They told the assembled protestors that they could arrest every one of them on the spot. However, the police could see that the protest was completely peaceful and good-natured, so they simply asked them to take their banners down from the gates and I understand that there was some friendly banter too-ing and fro-ing between protestors and the long arm of the law.

The protestors decided to move on to the Ministry of Justice, where the doors were quickly locked for fear that the building might be stormed. They obviously don't realise what a peaceful lot our people are! Ordinary law-abiding citizens concerned about a great injustice being done to a human being by the Prison Service.

From there they proceeded to Downing Street where they displayed their banners and then to the Houses of Parliament before finally ending up at Trafalgar Square. Quite a jaunt for our intrepid protestors, but they got maximum publicity, being seen, photographed and videoed by tens of thousands of Londoners and tourists.

I was deeply gutted that I couldn't attend. A month ago I became blinded in the right eye and it became obvious after just thirty odd miles of riding that my left eye wasn't up to making the long journey to London and I had to limp home very slowly ... and carefully. That said, I salute all those brave men and women who attended the event to make their outrage at Charlie's treatment known throughout the Capital. You are ALL my heroes.

It's just a shame that the many thousands of people who profess to be supporters on Facebook can't get out there to show their conviction of Charlie's Just cause. But, judging from what those who did attend tell me, it was their loss as everyone who was there had a very enjoyable day in the Capital.

There's a gallery of photos from the event at the bottom of this page and here is a report from "Charlie look-alike" Steve Swatton, who bravely organised the event:

Dear Mal,

I hope you’re OK and keeping well. Sorry to hear about you eye.

The August 6th Demo went very well. We got our point across without anyone getting arrested … which was an added bonus.

I know the Queen was at home at the time of the event, not just because the flag was flying high, but because I saw her living room curtains twitching. I bet she said to old Prince Phillip “Fuck me Phillip, it’s that nutter Swatton again. First of all he bombards me with mail and now the bald headed bastard is stood there in front of my front gates surrounded by ruffians holding up banners with some sort of book in his hand!”

I tried three times to get the book into the Palace, all to no avail. I even thought of pushing it under the gates, but in hindsight I’m glad I was talked out of it because it would have been treated as a bomb scare and half of London would have been shut off! [Note from Mal: Would that have been the half that wasn’t being burned down in the riots Steve?]

The book is now going on ebay as the book that visited Charlie’s landlady and the proceeds will go towards helping Charlie’s legal costs.

I met a lot of Charlie’s friends and supporters, all good compassionate people … salt of the earth. I should like to say a thank you to Ifty for looking after me on the day; if it wasn’t for him I would have been lost more than once, I can tell you.

Charlie loves it when I tell him people mistake me for him, sometimes at his charity events. It gives him a good laugh.

All joking aside, there will only be ONE Charlie Bronson and I’m only half the man he is. I’m proud and honoured to be his friend.

Thanks to everyone,
Old Steveie Boy

PS God Save Our Queen. Max Respect.

PPS I haven’t got a computer. I’ve been told that there’s a lot of messages on the web. A friend runs my Facebook page for me. I’ll try to get messages out to all of you. Please don’t think I’m being rude or disrespectful. It’s just that I’m a right old dinosaur: no mobile, no computer, no transport … just like the REAL Charlie Bronson, eh? Respect and love to everyone of you.

Old Stevie Boy
