A fridge too far for charity

POLICEMAN Glenn White-house had to use more than just strong-arm tactics when he took on an unusual charity challenge in aid of the Jonathan Felstead appeal.

Mr Whitehouse, of Upton, travelled eight miles with a fridge strapped to his back to raise more than £1,000.

Branding the challenge A Fridge Too Far, Mr Whitehouse left Market Street in Hemsworth, before travelling along Station Road to Ackworth, through Pontefract and finishing at Freeport shopping centre in Castleford.

He said he had the idea after reading that Charles Bronson once managed to lift a fridge on his own up three flights of stairs.

He added: "I recently did a half-marathon with eight other people, carrying a giant log, and was looking for a new challenge. When I read about Jonathan in the paper, I decided this was exactly what I was looking for.

"It was tough, but I made a promise to myself that I wouldn't put it down at any point and even though I was a bit sore at the end I managed it."

The Jonathan Felstead appeal was launched after the 20-year-old, from Hemsworth, contracted a measles-related viral illness in November 2003. He now needs 24-hour care. Money is being raised for stem cell treatment offered by a specialist in Amsterdam.

Mr Whitehouse, 32, was joined by Jonathan's mother Sophia, his aunt Margaret Madarasi and family friend Anne Hall.
