A word (or several) from TEL CURRIE, unlicenced boxing promoter

OK, lets cut through the shit. For those of you who don’t know (or perhaps think you know) Charlie Bronson, lets start with the basic facts and dispel a few media myths surrounding the man:

1. Charlie Bronson has NEVER killed …. he is NOT a murderer.

2. Although tagged as an armed robber he never actually pulled off any major robberies and never pulled the trigger … nobody was ever hurt.

3. Charlie Bronson has actually undergone full examinations and been certified as SANE. Can you say the same?

4. Charlie was never really a major villain when he was out. His trouble started in prison with run in’s with screws, governors and authority in general … and of course the nonces (child killers, rapists, etc.), who Charlie (like every other decent person) despises!

5. Charlie Bronson’s real name is Mick Peterson. He DID NOT change his name because he liked the idea of the ‘Death Wish’ films starring the original Charles Bronson. His promoter gave the name to him as a fight name in the unlicensed ring. He thought it was a more attractive to punters than Mickey Peterson.

6. Charlie is, in fact, an extremely warm hearted man and bloody funny. He is also an extremely gifted artist and has had his own exhibitions of work displayed throughout the U.K.

7. Charlie would not boast much about this but his art has raised thousands and thousands in auctions at boxing shows etc. for sick children. I can vouch for this personally because his art raised hundreds for the kiddies at my Warriors unlicensed shows alone.

“So,” I hear you whimper “you would say that because he’s your mate” WRONG! The reason he is my mate is because of the qualities in the man I mentioned above. I have a family and would not want anyone I considered a danger to society walking the streets any more than any other person would. Charlie is NOT one of those dangers.

Of course, you people reading this are not silly. Charlie has done silly things, certainly no angel (but then who is?).

For over 30 years now Charlie has been Cat A, most of it spent locked up 23 hours a day in a cage. It took Charlie over 20 years just to get a television! (the nonces get TV’s no problem.) 

I have been to Wakefield a number of times to visit Charlie in Wakefield. Wakefield prison is known as ‘Monster Mansion’. The reason being that this is where the most dangerous child killers and rapists are he! So what the fuck is a man who has NEVER killed doing there?

When visiting Charlie you will enter the opening visiting section to get to the canteen. Here scum like Ian Huntley and Roy Whiting (who killed little Sarah Payne) sit with children running all around them on cozy open visits. There is even a small children’s play area in the visiting room where these monsters are roaming around!!!! Charlie’s visits, on the other hand, are closed and behind bars . These are facts. Does that seem right to you?

Charlie’s case has convinced me that all that stuff about the purpose of prison being reform and rehabilitation is pure bollocks. I think for the minor crimes Charlie has committed over 30 years on Category A, most of it in the Seg (segregation unit), is punishment enough for anyone. Don’t you?

Reg Kray, who did actually kill someone, was downgraded through the categories. Not so Charlie. It’s a tragic and disturbing reflection on our society when you start realising that someone could have been treated better if they had taken a life. That can’t be right, can it?

As for rehabilitation and reform, how do you know that reform has worked if you are not given a chance to prove you have reformed?

Charlie can’t prove anything to anyone whilst locked in a cage for 23 hours a day. They should at least see how he goes on the normal prison wings, preferably away from Monster Mansion where the mildest of decent, real men would become angry and violent if confronted by a grinning Ian Huntley. 

So why was Charlie Bronson given a life?

In Hull prison, Charlie had settled nicely in the unit. For the first time he felt he had a base to plan his future and was spending his days creating his art work, much of it for children’s charities. He was promised he would be staying in the unit which he loved like we love our homes… They Lied!

Just like anyone being evicted from their home it was extremely stressful, especially as he had also been cruelly lied to. In desperation Charlie took teacher Phil Danielson ‘hostage’ as a desperate bargaining chip. On top of that, the screws had told Charlie that Danielson had slagged off the only thing he really had at that time: his art. This was his life being scrutinized on top of been uprooted. It appears Danielson was also let into areas of the prison he should not have been in (a set up?) and this led him to Charlie. Charlie, now in complete turmoil, took Danielson ‘hostage’ for a few days. Silly boredom breakers followed with Charlie and Danielson dancing around and watching Tele Tubbies. Phil Danielson was NOT harmed in any way, was released without a scratch and actually admitted he sympathized with Charlie and actually bonded with him. For that Charlie got life!!!

Now, I don’t wish to labour this point, but how many child abusers and killers draw a lot lesser sentences?

Of course, if you do wrong you have to be punished. But surely the punishment should fit the crime? If EVERYONE who took a hostage got life for it then fair enough … but they don’t!

How many monsters have done unspeakable acts and been release after a short sentence, how long did Gary Glitter do? How long did Jonathan King do? How long did Maxine Carr do?

At his appeal last year, Charlie actually apologized to Phil Danielson and his family in open court. It was a genuine and heartfelt apology about a time 6 years ago when, under duress and out of sheer desperation, he played his only card. Even under these circumstances Danielson was unharmed. So if Charlie did not harm someone who had slagged him off under those conditions it makes a mockery of the media labels of Charlie being ‘Britain’s most dangerous prisoner’, ‘a Madman’, ‘ the most violent man in the system’, blah, blah, blah. 

Charlie Bronson is now in his 50’s and has had enough!

Most people would be surprised at the amount of good work Charlie does, mainly for children, even though he keeps all that rather quiet to avoid the obvious cynics backlash (you can’t win with those people). I thought I would mention it here to get things into perspective. And perspective, balance and comparison is what this whole case is about. 

It seems to escape a lot of people, but Charlie has a hell of a lot to give out here. Because of the genuine man he is, Charlie has hundreds of great and close friends from ALL walks of life including straight, sensible businessman, writers, plumbers, carpenters, parents of sick children and of course former rascals like Roy Shaw, Joey Pyle, Charlie Richardson and Jimmy Boyle who WERE given the opportunity to prove themselves. As a consequence, these men are successful and straight businessmen who give a hell of a lot more back than they ever took out. Charlie Bronson will always have friends to look after him (REAL monsters do not have many friends) and he has even been promised jobs to get him on track. This man I know will NOT return to crime, there are too many options open to him upon his release.

All we ask here is for people to open their minds, compare a non-killer with the lesser sentences serial murderers receive and balance it up, is it right?? Of course not!

Please do not believe the press hype (and admittedly sometimes Charlie’s own hype) and consider: is it right a 50 + year old, non killing, warm hearted, highly intelligent and artistic man who has lost many loved ones just simply be allowed to rot in a cage while we all take the easy option and turn away?

Any coward can turn away, only people of courage will stand up and be counted. PLEASE, PLEASE be one of life’s ‘doers’ and don’t follow the sheep who are filled to the brim with misinformation and usually shout the loudest while completely missing the point.

My good friend Mal will do a great job of this site for our mate Charlie. Mal is a typical hard working, genuine straight man who realizes what’s happening to Charlie is WRONG!
