MUSICAL CHARLIE
by Mal
(7th October 2010)
ON the 24th March 2010 Charlie attained his Grade 3
Performance Certificate (with Merit) after six months of
training with Fiona Morris whilst at HMP Woodhill. Here's the
certificate, below which you'll find an email I received
recently from Fiona recounting her time with Charlie.

Hello Mal.
My name is Fiona Morris and I worked with
Charlie at HMP Woodhill for six months from Jan
10 to June 10 2010. I have many fond memories of
our singing lessons, held on a Wednesday
morning. We were preparing for his second Rock
School exam, grade 4 when he was moved to
Wakefield. I know he would have passed very well
and could easily have gone all the way through
to grade 8. I managed to get quite a lot of CD's
in to Charlie with many of his favorite tracks
on, in the hope that it would help pass some
time and keep him, focused. The day I was
finally allowed to bring in two mouth organs was
unfortunately the day he was moved.
The singing lesson that turned into an impromptu
open air concert that we held in the exercise
yard whilst eating chunky kit kaks is a memory
that i will never forget and even though
Security were furious with me as they felt I was
encouraging inappropriate songs ( My Way by
Frank Sinatra) it was so worth it!!!! It is now
known as Charlie's song in our household.
I finished working for HMP Woodhill at the end
of July 2010 and wanted to write to Charlie to
encourage him and to offer our support. My
husband Rob also worked at Woodhill and ran a
mock singing exam for Charlie and our two
children Harry and Annie burnt the CD's and
downloaded all the tracks Charlie asked for, so
all of us wanted to wish him well, let him know
we are thinking about him and give him 100%
support. If you are able to let him know i have
been in touch I would appreciate it as i never
did get the chance to say goodbye and tell him
what a pleasure he was to work with. If Charlie
would like to stay in touch with us by letter
and you think our letters would get through to
him we would be very happy to write. Please
email me if you get a moment. Keep up the good
work and i really do hope that the protest
outside Wakefield Prison does open the public's
eyes and has the desired effect.
Kind regards
Fiona Morris |
